How to Overcome Stress at Work?
Nowadays stress and stressful situations are such common issues that majority of people accept it as a natural and inherent from the whole affair. Probably it would be difficult to find people who have never felt anxious, tired or apathetic, lost the motivation. Usually this mode is influenced not only by one reason but by the whole of it- fear to be fired, unfriendly staff, poor work conditions, heavy workload, endless problematic situations with customers and colleagues, overtime, strict boss and many other factors. Unfortunately, people usually accept it as a natural affair and they don't even know that the situation may be different, just you need to put some effort for that.
What is stress?
In order to fight against the stress, it is necessary to define what it is. It exists in everybody's life. Generally this is an emotional state which causes discomfort. In other words, when any situation arises, when you need to take a decision, the brain informs us, that "something is wrong" and you should take some actions how to solve it. Stress increases when there is a lack of information how to solve the problems by postponing it, trying not to pay attention. Surely, stress is not always a negative subject. Sometimes it pushes a person to evaluate the situation once again, make the necessary decisions which were being postponed. Once making them, especially if the solutions were right, stress disappears, euphoria might come, however, it does not last long- until the next stressful situation. And then everything repeats again. You can not ignore the stress at work, because in a contrary case the consequences might be hurtful- nervous breakdown, depression, deteriorating health. Sometimes people do not evaluate the harm done by stress and understand that only when the health goes down. Therefore, it is important to make some changes in advance by shaping appropriate habits and take effective actions so that to reduce the stress.
What does increase the stress?
One of the main reasons for stress is multitasking. This is a way of work when the person performs some actions at the same time. For example, he talks on phone while entering the data to the Excel sheet and counting the bills. It might seem running fine- the work is effective, however, many experiments show that by multitasking the quality of tasks decreases significantly. Of course, there are people who perform that perfectly, but to achieve this skill you need to have enough experience and trainings.
For some people it is so unpleasant when in the middle of tense and productive activity the phone starts ringing. And the customer or colleague begins chatting without stop. Such and similar interferences significantly reduce the quality and quantity of performed tasks.
Before every more important task hesitation and doubts come if he/she will be able to handle with it. This is a natural person's condition, however, people very often consciously postpone the important tasks. They hope that somebody will solve the situation. Certainly, it happens very occasionally, and finally, when they start doing the tasks, they have already lost a lot of valuable time.
Work in the office is inseparable from the sitting in the chair. Looking historically, the humankind has been never sitting so much as it has been doing in the last century. Due to this issue, people face with many physical health problems.
How to fight with stress?
In order to fight with stress, there are two options: eliminate the causes of stress or fight with the consequences. It is unbelievable, but many people do like that, although the more effective way would be to protect from the stress in advance. Thus, the first step in fight with stress is the identification of causes. You personally have to find the situations which attract the stress. it might be the lack of sleep, overtime, not clear knowledge of your responsibilities, uncertainty of the future. In every situation, there is a reason and it is very important to find it. It might look not serious, however, it has a much bigger impact than you may imagine. Many people do a mistake by not evaluating the work environment properly, their own habits, people around, colleagues. Do not postpone, take the actions now. Observe yourself for a while. So that to be easier, write down the situations which cause a discomfort for you. Evaluate it how they affect you. Remember that identifying and systematising the causes, you will do a big step for the more effective control of stress.
Have good quality sleep. People with very strong sleeping habits are able to wake up in the morning before the alarm rings, or at weekends, when they can sleep as much as they want, they wake up at the usual time. The proper sleep mode creates the conditions for the organism to relax and avoid sleepiness and laziness at work.
Energetic start of the day. Many people are easily vulnerable in the mornings, they can be affected even by a small failure, for example, too early call from the boss or customer with a certain request. It is very important to start the day in a good mood. The bright light in a bathroom, short exercises, breakfast, leaving to work 10-15 minutes earlier than usually- these are the factors which might help in the morning.
Clear communication and responsibilities, positive environment. Many people feel uncomfortable because they don't know or are not perfectly sure what is expected and required from them. So, it is very important to talk to the boss from time to time and make sure you understand each other. It is recommended to avoid all the possible disputes or negative emotions. Better concentrate on positive thinking and some humour.
